2. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Mauro Lombardo, mayor of Guidonia Montecelio:
“Unfortunately, this morning during an exercise of four planes of the Italian air force, that took off from our airport of Guidonia Montecelio, two planes collided and plummeted to the ground. Unfortunately, both pilots died. One plane fell onto a meadow, while the second one landed here, right in the middle of the houses of Colle Fiorito, a neighbourhood of our town. It was a miracle and also (due to) the pilot’s heroic action that the tragedy did not become much bigger, because the plane crashed into a street, surrounded by houses without touching any building.”

STORYLINE:
Two Italian air force planes collided in mid-air and crashed to the ground on Tuesday, killing both pilots.
The air force said in a statement that the pilots were taking part in a routine exercise when their U-208 aircraft collided near the Guidonia military airport, around 25 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of Rome.
One of the planes came down in a meadow, while the other crashed in the town of Guidonia Montecelio, skimming buildings before coming down on a parked car.
No injuries on the ground were reported.
The pilots who died in the crash were specialised in formation flying.
