In this tutorial we will be learn " Centre Lathe | Name and Function of Lathe Parts ".
A lathe removes undesired material from a rotating work piece in the form of chips with the help of a cutting tool which is feed against the work either longitudinally or cross-wise to make the work to the required shape & size.
How an engine lathe is specified?
An engine lathe is specified as follows:-
(1) Swing diameter over bed.
(2) Swing diameter over carriage.
(3) Height of the lathe centers.
(4) Distance between the centers.
(5) Type of drive.
(6) No. Of variation of spindle speeds.
(7) Range of variation of spindle speeds.
(8) Taper no. Of lathe centers.
(9) Pitch of thread in lead screw.
(10)Floor space required for installation of the machine.
(11)Approximate weight of lathe.
(12) H.P. required driving the machine.
Write down the important parts of a lathe & state their function.:-
The important parts of a lathe & their function are given below:-
(1) Bed:- It is a cast iron structure which supports all movable & fixed mountings of the lathe. It has horizontal guide ways on its top parallel to the length of the bed. The movable mountings are slides along these guide ways.
(2) Head stock:- The headstock consists of the following parts:-
A) cone pulley:- used to obtain speed variation of lathe spindle.
B) Back gear:- used to obtain speed variation of lathe spindle.
C) Lathe spindle:- used to hold & support the job & to drive it.
D) Feed reverse gears:- used to provide power feeds to the lathe carriage & to reverse the movement of the lathe carriage.
(3) Tail stock:- it is mounted on the lathe bed & can be slided along the lathe bed over the guide ways. The functions of tailstock are:-
a) To hold & support the other end of the job during machining operation on it.
b) To hold cutting tools for performing operations like drilling, reaming, tapping etc.
c) To turn taper on a job (setting over of the tail stock method)
(4) Lathe carriage:- The lathe carriage supports, guide & feeds the cutting tool against the job during machining operation on it.
The lathe carriage consist of the following parts:-
a) Saddle: used to support the cross slide, compound rest & tool post.
b) Compound rest: used to turn taper on a short job & to support the tool post.
c) Tool post: used to hold & support the cutting tools.
(5) Apron:- It is the hanging portion of the lath carriage. The function of apron are:-
a) to produce automatic longitudinal feed of the lathe carriage.
b) To produce automatic cross feed of the cutting tool.
c) To produce longitudinal hand feed of the lathe carriage.
What do you understand by all geared head stock?
All geared head stock is that head stock in which all variation of spindle speed are obtained by using gears only.
Advantages of all geared head stock:-
a) Speed changed can be done very quickly. No necessary of stopping machine & changing belt as required in step pulley headstock.
b) Quite a large no of speeds are available.
c) No question of slip of belt.
Dis advantages:-
a) Mechanism is complicated for which skilled mechanic is required to repair this type of headstock.
b) This is costlier than the belt driven lathes.
c) Power is lost due to the friction of gear.
