Pongal: Business dull for potters in city
Trichy: Earthen pots, an inseparable identity of Pongal festivities, are not much in demand this time, according to potters in Trichy. With only days left for the traditional thanksgiving festival of the state, potters said the business is dull even though the price of pots has not increased that much.
As people prefer cooking the signature dishes, Ven Pongal (plain Pongal) and Sakkarai Pongal (Sweetened Pongal), of the Pongal festival in clay pots in a traditional style, usually the sales of clay pots used to pick up during the season. Apart from the permanent shops, temporary stalls would often crop up near Melachinthamani and Gandhi market localities for Pongal festival. However, the sales of clay pots have not gained steam this year. “This year’s Pongal festival is dull. Despite the copious flow of water in the Cauvery, the sales of pots have not been picked up so far,” A Rukmini, a pot seller from Melachinthamani, said. The potters have exclusively designed Pongal pots weighing from 1 kg to 3 kg. The price of a one-kg Pongal pot is Rs 120. They said that city dwellers did not arrive as expected to purchase clay pots.
It seems that college managements and private event organisers in the city who have been hosting community Pongal festival in a traditional manner have come to the rescue of the potters to an extent. “College students purchased pots in bulk quantity,” Rukmini added. The potters, however, hoped that the sales would pick up ahead of the Kaanum Pongal (January 17) as traditional games including Uriyadi (pot breaking) contest will be organized during the time.
