(14 May 1978) Thousands of refugees have fled the area around the mayon volcano in the Philippines which has erupted in a huge shower of hot rock and molten lava. the volcano, 200 miles (320 km) southeast of the Filipino capital of Manila, rumbled to life earlier this month and has become increasingly active. The earth tremors have increased and the volcano has begun to spew out molten lava and red hot-rocks the size of cars. Filipino government officials have reported the lava flow to have covered three-fourths of the mountain.
