The Problem of NBOMe
Synopsis
The NBOMe-type hallucinogens first appeared in the illicit drug market in 2010. Since that time, NBOMe-type hallucinogens have been responsible for a number of hospitalisations and deaths in Australia and globally. NBOMe-type hallucinogens have appeared as a powder, liquid, tablet or on blotter, in many cases being sold as "LSD" or "Ecstasy." There have been a number of mass-overdoses of NBOMe-type hallucinogens, which has created challenges for festival organisers and emergency services. This presentation will provide an overview of the emergence of NBOMe-type hallucinogens in Australia, provide a number of case studies of adverse reactions associated with NBOMe, and discuss the implications in terms harm reduction and crowd care services for music festivals.
