The popliteal space is located on the back of your knee, and it houses a few major muscles that play an important role in keeping your body balanced and functional. The popliteus muscle, for example, works with the biceps femoris to control the motion of your knee. If this area becomes too inflamed or injured, it can cause popliteus muscle pain and discomfort in your leg and may even interfere with walking.
