CMOS batteries are usually made of lithium, nickel cadmium (NiCad), or alkaline. They are typically 3–7.2 volts and are either soldered onto the motherboard or plugged in with a snap-in connector.
Signs that a CMOS battery has died include:
1. Difficulty booting up
2. Drivers disappearing
3. Incorrect date and time
4. "Time and Date Not Set" or "CMOS checksum error" message on power up
A computer can boot without a CMOS battery, but all BIOS settings will be reset and the time and date will be inaccurate.
