Catfish Farming : Catfish farming is an important agricultural fish farming business. These catfish are being grown under several production systems and with various degrees of management. Successful catfish farming generally requires constructing facilities; controlling water quality, rearing, stocking and feeding fish and harvesting and marketing the fish crop. A fish farmer can grow catfish in Cement Tank, ponds, cages or raceways.
Catfish Feeds :
Good catfish feed contains 34 to 38 percent protein, 8 percent fat, 11 to 22 percent carbohydrates and 12 to 17 percent fiber. A minimum of 8 percent of the ration should be from fishmeal and all feeds should contain the recommended vitamins. Feeds are sold as floating or sinking pellets and as finely ground meal or crumbles. Floating pellets cost more but are more stable than sinking pellets. They also enable you to determine whether the fish are feeding. If they are not feeding, find the cause and correct.
Catfish feeds provide all the nutrients catfish need in a highly digestible form. Several feedmills manufacture catfish feeds. Commercial catfish feeds are similar in composition are of high quality and provide for rapid, efficient growth. Following are some examples.
Fry feed, Fingerling feed, Food fish feed.
Ingredient : Soyabean meal (50%), Cottonseed meal (45%), Menhaden meal (65%), corn grain, Wheat middlings, Dicalcium phosphate, Catfish Vitamin mix, Catfish mineral mix, Fat or Oil.
W A R N I N G S : Some communities require special permit to produce farm-raised catfish. Check with your local licensing board before beginning your project.
