Mangroves are forests like no others. They grow with their roots in water, and are the only trees capable of living in salt water and breathing thanks to their aerial roots. With their shrubs providing a precious shelter, mangroves house and feed abundant life.
Madagascar boasts 20% of the mangroves on the African continent, but its lush shrubs are disappearing. In 30 years, these forests have lost a quarter of their surface through illegal deforestation. Villagers in Boanamary are implementing sustainable use of the mangroves, a natural, rich source of life and resources.
