This is probably the worst that could happen to a KLR that is burning oil. The exhaust camshaft (Specifically the KACR) exploded and sent shards of metal all over the top end. It broke the cam cap and only half of the exhaust cam was intact.
All in all, I ended up needing to buy a new cylinder head (got one used from eagle mike) and new cams. That would have fixed it and got me back on the road but why stop there?? I bought the EM 685 kit and Schnitz Hot Cams. Also got the KLX kit for the carb and countless other mods lol
But to fix the bike all i needed was a new head and cams. If the cam cap had not broken, i probably could have used the same cylinder head as long as there weren't any metal bits sticking out.
I rode that bike another 4K miles before trading it off. I do miss it sometimes! After all the mods, it was a great bike to ride and VERY reliable. Feel free to ask any questions in the comment section and I will try to have faster response times!
