In his annual year-end news conference, President Barack Obama sought to lay the groundwork Friday for his last year in office by vowing not to fade in the background but instead use his remaining months to push longstanding goals to fruition.
Amid widespread fears about terrorism and extremists, Obama pushed back against critics questioning his strategy for overcoming the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. He insisted anew, "We will defeat ISIS."
He said that despite the Islamic State group's capacities to infiltrate western countries and "the savviness of their social media" that "will continue to make them dangerous for quite some time... we will systematically go after them."
