A common problem among creators: they don’t have enough ideas. (The book How to Write Funny solves that problem.)
A less common problem: you have too many ideas. Too many plans, too many projects you’re excited about. Sometimes the excitement level reaches a fevered pitch. We want to do all of it right now! We want the projects finished—immediately. We get overwhelmed, and then we can’t do anything, so the projects never get done.
This can go on for months, even years. This is option paralysis. We sit around with a lot of big ideas but nothing to show for it. Meanwhile, other people get things done and make things happen.
The solution is simple:
1. Take a moment to understand that projects take time. You can’t finish any big project in an hour or a day.
2. Pick one project among the many that you’re excited about. It doesn’t matter which one.
3. Make a modest deadline for completing it, and then sit down and do some work on it that will put you on the path to meeting that deadline.
4. Set a timer and work for 20 minutes. Now it's manageable.
This simple process will satisfy your urge to do something and get you through option paralysis.
Good luck and have fun!
