About the Trek:
Bedni bugyal trek is one of the famous treks in Uttarakhand. We have done many of the winter treks — and all of them are great. But the Ali Bedni winter trek is the one with the most beautiful snow covers. In the forests, the snow settles softly under the boughs of the oaks and rhododendrons. Ali Bedni are two of the largest alpine meadows of our country. Under the snow cover, their beauty is magnified many times. But what really makes every trekker stop in their trek is the sight of Mt Trishul and Mt Nandaghunti looming over the meadows like protective deities. Early in the morning when you are trekking up the slope, the sun slants through the trees hitting the snow at magical angles. I mean you see their full face, like the entire 6,000-7,000 meters of Mt Trishul right in front of you. Imagine the grandiosity with the sun setting on it. The oak and rhododendron forest on the Ali-Bedni Bugyal trek are the densest I have trekked in. Perhaps, they are also the rarest because most of these trees are easily a thousand years old. Especially if you do it early in the morning, as we have done it. In many places, you see sunlight falling from spectacular angles. It’s a photographer’s delight to catch these sun rays falling through the leaves at charming angles. It creates lovely lighting.
Bedni Bugyal: Considered amongst the finest high altitude grasslands in the Garhwal mountains (altitude 3354 meters) famous for wild high altitude flowers and herbs during the spring thaw, and offering a splendid view of the Greater Himalayan range. Arguably one of the most romantic spots in the Himalayas - virgin meadows greet the visitor, for as far as the eye can see, scenic mountains, deep valleys, and lofty mountains present the most memorable sunsets and sunrises, and above all, the enormous western flank of Trishul and the Nanda Ghunti overlooks this heaven on earth! One of the larger Bugyals (High altitude meadows) in Uttaranchal, The Vaitarni lake (also called the Bedni Kund) is located in this region, and is famous for the rare Brahma Kamal flower, and is also a major way-station on the Nanda Raj Jaat Yatra, a ritual procession held every 12 years. Bedni Bugyal also serves as a stopover for the famed Roopkund trek!
Trek Route:
Day 1: Dehradun - Rishikesh - Shrinagar - Rudraprayag - Karanprayag - Tharali - Lohajung - Kuling - Wan. (Motorable distance up to Wan). Total Distance traveled 303 km. Elevation 400 meters near Dehradun and 2400 meters at Wan.
Lohajung is the last good market. The name comes from the myth that Goddess Parvati had a war (jung) with a demon Lohasur here. One can buy or rent jackets, hand gloves, caps, shoes etc.
Day 2: Wan - Laatu Devta temple - Ran ka Dhar - Ghairoli Patal (3000 meters). Total Distance 5 km and time 5 hrs.
The initial trail is cemented and goes through a cluster of houses. Soon, you will see two trails, one goes to the temple of Latu Devta, a local deity, and the other is the one we take. Ring the temple bell here for a safe trek before going back to the ascending trail to the ridge – Ranaka Dhar. A short descent and we get to a small bridge over Neel Ganga. Now, begins the beautiful ascent towards Ghairoli Patal. The trail now winds through Oak and Rhododendron forests completely covered in snow. Your halt near Ghairoli will be a check post of the forest department. You will find Sunil bhaiya over here. He will be your host at Ghairoli.
Day 3: Ghairoli Patal - Vaitarni (Bedni Kund) - Bedni Bugyal (3400 meters) - Ghairoli Patal. Total Distance 3 km and time 3 hr.
With a nice warm breakfast at Ghairoli. The trail again takes you into dense forests and after half an hour of ascending stoned steps, the trail opens up to a huge meadow. Suddenly, abruptly, the oak and Rhododendrons fall behind you, and stretched in front of you is the largest, white rolling carpet ever laid out for you. You’ve are now at Bedini Bugyal. After sunset, we returned back to our base camp Ghairoli patal.
All tiredness forgotten, soak in the mesmerizing sight of the undulating meadows of Bedini Bugyal. You are on the top of a ridge that spreads in every direction – acres and acres of green meadow scooped out of the mountainside.
Day 4: Ghairoli Patal - Wan - Dehradun
