This past weekend we found ourselves on the silent and forlorn industrial streets of Cleveland in the frigid early morning temperatures to investigate yet another example of Cleveland's former glorious industrial past; the WHITE DOVE MATTRESS FACTORY. Empty of its former hustle and bustle, the five floors of this former business offered up many interesting features and surprises. While I'm still looking for the comprehensive and solid history of the building, we do know that the company began in 1922 and I am assuming that this building was built at or around that time. As far as its closing date, I am still looking for that information and will share it as soon as I locate it! If YOU know anything about White Dove or perhaps even if you worked there in the past, by all means, please let us know and share your memories/stories in the comments section below!
From the White Dove website: “We bring peace to a hectic world.”
- H. Goodman, Founder, White Dove Mattresses
"In 1933 the Great Depression ravaged our nation and drove most entrepreneurs out of business. For start-up mattress maker and product engineer H. Goodman, the times challenged the legacy of the company he intended to leave to his sons. And so, like so many Americans at that time, he innovated. He contributed the best way he knew how. H. Goodman invented the White Dove, an affordable, durable and comfortable mattress that was the first to layer the Holland Innerspring with a layer of body forming foam. Over the next 100 years, White Dove grew its lines and offerings thriving on a reputation of quality and affordable luxury."
The fantastic thing, despite the abandonment of their original factory, now standing guard over a mostly deserted post-industrial area, White Dove is still producing lines of mattresses for commercial purchase in nearby Newburgh Heights, Ohio, in a much more modern facility. Luckily for us, the old building is still around to see and hear the echoes of its history. Enjoy the walkthrough of White Dove, and imagine how it must have been in the earlier parts of the Twentieth Century as workers created top-of-the-line mattresses for Clevelanders and others abroad! -Mr. P.
