In this video, we're sharing 5 of our best tips to take better photos using your smartphone (iPhone or Android).

Tip 1: Lighting is everything

Photography in general is all about lighting. The better your light is (quality and amount) the better your photo will turn out. This is especially true with smartphones because of their smaller sensors. The more aware you are of the amount and quality of light around you, the better your photos will turn out.

Tip 2: Make sure to focus

Having your subject in focus can be the difference between a good photo and a bad photo with your smartphone. Remember to always use the autofocus feature when taking an image.

Tip 3: Control your exposure

Smartphone these days will allow you to choose which area of the photo you want to be properly exposed by clicking on it. It's easy to get the correct exposure in the day time, but when it gets a little bit darker, smartphones usually overcompensate for the increased darkness by increasing the exposure too much. Blacks become more of a gray color, and as a result, images look grainier. You can fix this buy adjusting the exposure. (Lowering the exposure at night will give you truer blacks where they need to be, and a better looking image overall)

Tip 4: Lock the exposure and focus

After you have your desired exposure and focus, it's a good idea to lock them in so that you can make small adjustments to your composition without having the camera settings change on you.

Tip 5: Edit your photos

I'm a big fan of editing your photos. A lot of people think this is "cheating", but I think of it as a tool to get the best photo possible. The app that I like to use to process my photos is called VSCO. VSCO not only makes iPhone filters, but Lightroom and Photoshop presets as well. I use a few of their premium filters and they're great. They also have very good advanced photo adjustment settings you can use.
