Commodore MPS 1000 is a 9-pin dot-matrix printer manufactured by Epson for Commodore. Capable of 100cps in Draft and 20cps in NLQ (Near Letter Quality). Supports friction feed, pull tractor feed and optional single-bin cut sheet feeder (all shown in this video). Two interfaces - Commodore CBM 6-pin serial port (C64/C128) & regular Centronics parallel port (compatible with Amiga, IBM PC, Apple II etc). Two print modes (emulations) - Commodore and IBM 5152+.
The MPS 1000 looks physically the same as an Epson LX-80 or GX-80/Spectrum LX-90/HomeWriter 10.
I'm running this printer in IBM mode on a Pentium 4 PC with Windows Vista and Epson LX (80-column) driver. Vista doesn't have separate drivers for individual LX models (and lacks IBM 5152 driver).
The original IBM Graphics Printer 5152 is largely a rebadged Epson MX-80/Graftrax with IBM graphics characters in place of Epson italics - yet overall, the characteristics of the MPS 1000 in "IBM 5152+" mode are closer to Epson LX series (especially the LX-86). IBM adheres to Epson command set for the most part but there are some differences e.g. n/72 inch line spacing selection (ESC "A" n) must be followed with ESC "2" in IBM mode to activate the new line spacing. Epson just uses ESC "A" n on its own and ESC "2" invokes 1/6-inch line spacing. Nevertheless from my tests, the Epson LX driver in Windows (Vista/Win 7) appears fully compatible with Commodore MPS-1000, presumably as it steers clear of commands that behave differently in IBM's implementation.
