Total War: Three Kingdoms stands out amongst Total War games partially because it takes place in China, a location the series has never visited before, but also because it was the first Total War to really mix the mythological with the historical. This created a game with a completely different feel than Total Wars prior, both for better and worse. At the same time, Three Kingdoms did much in the way of game mechanics, with developer Creative Assembly finally taking a big leap forward in terms of diplomatic negotiations and faction diversity. This makes Three Kingdoms something of a pioneer in terms of Total War games, and I discuss and analyze it all in this video.
Development has now long since stopped on TW3K, but there is a ton of content here, and a sequel is coming up. With that in mind, we review Total War: Three Kingdoms for what it is, talking both about what we dislike, but also what we love, and how this balance comes together to create a game that you can either dislike, love, or feel just so-so about.
