In this video, I take a look at the Yamnayan ancestry harboured by Ancient, Medieval, and modern Iranians. Based on the latest available genetic research, the Yamnayan culture was ancestral to nearly all Indo-European speaking populations, including Iranians and South Asians. In relation to Iran, Iranians have harboured around 20% Yamnayan heritage since the Iron Age. In fact, Iranians show greater than 90% genetic continuity to the Iron Age and Medieval Iranians. Kurds and Azerbaijanis also harbour significant amounts of Yamnayan ancestry, at around 20%, and they are not very genetically distinct from contemporary Iranian populations. Surprisingly, Indian shifted Iranians, such as the Sistanis, Bandaris, and Baluchis, also harbour around 20 to 25% Yamnayan heritage. Thus, all Iranian populations throughout history and up until the present-day harbour significant amounts of Yamnayan heritage, thanks in largely part to their Indo-European origins. The autosomal breakdowns featured in this analysis were done using Davidski's G25 Calculator, which was utilized through the Genoplot software. The sources are listed below, including a study on the genetic history of the Southern Arc, which featured the Iron Age Iranian samples presented in this analysis.
