Flinders Petrie is one of the biggest names in Egyptian archaeology, and he's a controversial figure with good reason. In some ways he is the pinnacle of the problematic Victorian 'gentleman scholar'.
Yet there are positive aspects of his legacy, as he set standards for the scientific rigour of archaeology that are still (mostly) upheld to this day.
