STORYLINE:
A Jewish man was shot dead by a private security guard at one of Jerusalem's holy sites on Friday, according to Israeli police.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said a guard at the Western Wall fired "a number of shots" at a man who he said appeared suspicious.
The man, said to be aged in his 40s, died at the scene.
A local resident who declined to give his name said he knew the dead man and that he wasn't violent.
"I don't think there was any situation that warranted shooting him," he said.
Rosenfeld said the security guard had approached the man who had shouted "Allahu akbar", Arabic for "God is great", and had his hands in his pockets.
He said the guard had opened fire at the suspect "who maintained serious injuries at the scene" and was later pronounced dead.
Rosenfeld said police cordoned off the area after the shooting and are investigating Friday's incident.
The Western Wall, a remnant of the biblical Jewish Temples, is one of Jerusalem's holiest places for Jewish people to pray.
The site and the area around it has previously been a focal point of violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
