Dermal fillers have become quite popular as a non-surgical route for treating wrinkles, folds, grooves, adding plumpness and volume, and even improving contours of the face. In general, they work by lifting, filling volumizing and even allowing the treated areas to be sculpted. Procedures can usually be done in less than an hour.
Many people wonder which dermal filler is the right choice for their needs. In this video, Dr.U discusses the general set of classifications as a useful overview for anyone who is considering this type of cosmetic procedure.
THE THREE BASIC TYPES OF DERMAL FILLERS
There are numerous different types of product brands that are available. But according to Dr.U they can be understood in terms of three basic categories, reducing one’s learning curve in a short time.
These main groups are based on the central ingredient used.
1. hyaluronic acid fillers
2. calcium hydroxylapatite filler
3. poly-L-lactic
HYALURONIC ACID
Hyaluronic acid is a type of naturally occurring sugar which exists in our own bodies. Commercially made dermal fillers use HA sourced from bacteria as a more sterile option. They differ in how the molecules are cross-linked together through bioengineering. This affects their viscosity and what applications they are best suited for in individual patients (e.g. filling the lips, cheeks, deep wrinkles, nasolabial folds, fine lines etc.). Dermal filler brands that use hyaluronic acid include: Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane and Belotero.
CALCIUM HYDROXYLAPATITE
Calcium hydroxlapatite is a calcium-based compound which is capable of offering a comparable firmness to bone tissue. The dermal filler which is made from this ingredient is called Radiesse. It offers the ability to refine and improve facial contours. Applications include the cheeks, under eyes, nose bridge, chin and nasolabial folds.
The calcium hydroxlapatite is in the form of microspheres within a gel medium. When injected, the particles aggregate or become more diffusely concentrated, depending on the surrounding tissue. Thus Radiesse is suitable for softer and firmer areas of the face
POLY-L-LACTIC
Poly-L-Lactic is a synthetic material which is used for producing absorbable sutures. It is the main ingredient of a dermal filler known as Sculptra. One of is well-known applications is replenishing a normal looking facial structure and volume in the faces of AIDS patients. Sculptra is often chosen due to its longevity.
Choosing the right dermal filler should be discussed with a qualified medical doctor, ideally someone with board certification in dermatology or plastic surgery. Considerations should generally include:
1. the objective(s)
2. the properties and behavior of the dermal filler
