On June 29, 2021, weather instruments in Spokane recorded an all-time record high temperature of 109 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Pacific Northwest heat wave of 2021 was unprecedented in the known history of this region. Combining the states of Washington, Oregon and the province of British Columbia, Canada, over 800 people died as a result of the unrelenting heat. In Spokane, 19 people lost their lives.
Washington set a new state record high temperature at the Hanford site: 120°. The previous record of 118° was tied in the Tri-Cities while Ephrata (115°) and Omak (117 °) both set new all-time records. North Idaho would reach into the top three for all-time highs in Lewiston, Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint. North of the border, Lytton, B.C. hit 121.3° Fahrenheit, which is Canada’s all-time highest temperature.
In the two years since, extreme heat has become even more pronounced around the world.
Later in 2021, a weather station on the island of Sicily recorded 120°. This temperature is still unverified, but would be the hottest temperature ever recorded in Europe if it is eventually confirmed.
In 2022, England's all-time record high of 104° was recorded. Summer 2022 was the hottest in Europe's history. A report from Reuters stated that an estimated 20,000 people died on the continent that year because of the waves of record heat. Severe heat waves were also recorded in Argentina, India, and Pakistan in 2022.
In 2023, extreme heat has gripped much of East Asia since April. Thailand recorded its all-time record high of 113° in April. June 2023 has been one of the hottest ever in China and Japan. In Siberia, triple-digit heat and new all-time records are becoming commonplace.
Another heat dome is also gripping parts of the United States here in late June. For over two weeks now this extreme heat is gripping Mexico, Texas, and now as far east as Mississippi.
The epicenter of the heat is the border town of Del Rio, Texas. A new high temperature record was set each day between June 18th and 27th. Each was over 100 degrees, including the all-time high of 115°.
After the Northwest heat dome, it was estimated by the World Weather Attribution research group that the event would have been virtually impossible without the influence of climate change. This group has since authored five more papers with essentially the same message for the heat waves in Argentina, Morocco, Pakistan, United Kingdom, and Southeast Asia.
