In 2017 my friend Matt made it a personal goal to catch a giant bluefin tuna from his boat on his fishing pole that he rigged. He wanted to catch a giant bluefin tuna, and he wanted to do it himself. Last year, I asked Matt to go fishing with me and that I was going to go catch the new Virginia state record bluefin tuna. I catch a lot of tunas and wanted to show Matt some tips. Matt refused to go with me because he said that was my goal, and he wanted to see me do it myself, and he wanted to accomplish his goal by himself. Matt has spent a lot of time learning how to catch giant bluefins and he has spent a lot of time preparing towards his goal.
In Virginia, we have a very short season where bluefin tuna are around, usually from January through March every year and Matt has been fishing quite a few times trying to accomplish his goal of catching a giant bluefin tuna. Matt has hooked several fish but for one reason or another, was never able to catch these fish. FINALLY , on January 11, 2021, Matt and his 16 year old daughter went tuna fishing and finally Matt caught a giant bluefin tuna while fishing from his boat. They had challenges in catching the fish. The handle broke off the reel and while fighting the fish they attached a screwdriver to make a makeshift handle. the fish almost spooled their reel, twice. The fish was too big and they hard a difficult time getting the fish onto the boat. But in the end they won, and those challenges make the catch so much more memorable to them. Great job Matt and Lily. Beautiful fish. Well earned, my friends.
After catching the fish, getting the giant tuna aboard the boat, then bringing the boat back to the dock, Matt was really excited to call me up and tell me the great news that he finally caught his giant tuna. He asked me to come to his house and assist with cleaning the 101 inch 500 pound giant tuna. After I removed all the meat from the huge fish, I go into the kitchen and I show how to prepare the delicacy- fresh giant bluefin tuna belly sashimi. Revered in Japanese culture, the fatty belly meat of the bluefin tuna is known as "Toro" and is the premiere choice for gourmet sushi chefs around the world. Fresh, wild-caught bluefin tuna Toro fetches hundreds of dollars per pound in high-end sushi restaurants, and I am very lucky that I get to experience this.
If you have ever eaten bluefin tuna sushi before, you know how delicious it is. I challenge you, in the video comments to describe what bluefin tuna tastes like. It is so unexplainably good, yet hard to put into words and describe. I am very good with words but have a very hard time explaining how bluefin tuna sushi is so good to eat. Bluefin tuna sounds like something that should be not good to eat. Its a mushy fish that is cold and greasy, similar to raw bacon. That does not sound appealing or appetizing, does it? Bluefin tuna sushi is one of those things that the words don't do it justice. I look forward to your comments, and if you haven't ever experienced bluefin tuna sushi, I would suggest making that happen.
