The art of audio-visual storytelling is a profound means of preserving both emotion and heritage. Tinka Tinka Foundation, founded by Dr. Vartika Nanda, is a pioneering force in the documentation of prison heritage. On October 27, 2022, the foundation marked the World Day of Audio Visual Heritage by introducing a new segment - Tinka Tinka Prison Bytes. This innovative initiative is dedicated to capturing the essence of prison life, from daily activities to special events, highlighting the artistic and creative dimensions of inmates within these confined spaces. These bytes have also fostered a culture of reformation through creativity.
Presenting to you the audio of Sonia Chowdhary, a life i=convict lodged in a jail in Haryana. She is an active radio jockey on Tinka Jail Radio. She was given Tinka Tinka Bandini Award in the year 2021 for her extraordinary contribution to jail radio and for motivating her fellow inmates for constructive engagement in jail
While documentation of heritage has always been an important fact of the process, the history of jails and inmates has often flown under the radar. Rarely has a thought been spared towards preserving their stories but Tinka Tinka Jail Radio is constantly engaged in this work, with an impressive collection of more than 80 episodes on YouTube. The channel by the name 'Tinka Tinka Prison Reforms' is the only Indian channel exclusively engaged in this space. These episodes provide a platform for the people in these jails to tell the accounts of their lives and grasp at a second chance at life.
Tinka Tinka Foundation has released 3 books by the titles 'Tinka Tinka Tihar', 'Tinka Tinka Dasna' and 'Tinka Tinka Madhya Pradesh', with the first one released in 2013 itself. These books have inputs from the inmates themselves, giving their voices a rare platform. The pages contain stories, the likes of which have never been heard before. These books are available for sale on amazon.
Every year on October 27, the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is observed globally. UNESCO chose this day to highlight the importance of recorded sound and video documents, as well as the hazards associated with their preservation.
