In this video we look at different control measures for Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) which can be used in both winter and spring barley.
The video explains two trials are part of a larger research project being conducted by Teagasc Oak Park looking at the movement of the aphid species which are the vectors of BYDV.
Both trials are evaluating the role of decision support tools (DSS) in their effectiveness of giving advice to farmers about controlling the virus with a view of reducing the amount of insecticides used in barley crops.
The first trial is looking at aphid trapping as a tool for giving advice based on the species found in the traps and the strain, if any, of the virus that they are carrying. The second trial is looking at a current DSS system to see if it is useful in an Irish situation.
