Praeludium in E minor (BuxWV 142) by Dieterich Buxtehude performed by Ben Bloor in a live recital on the 64 stop 1989 Mander organ of Rochester Cathedral on Wednesday 29th May 2024.
Born around 1637, Dieterich Buxtehude held the post of organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck for the majority of his life. His output for organ stands at the apex of the evolution of the North German Organ School, and was a huge influence on, amongst others, a young J.S. Bach. As well as numerous inventive praeludia in the so-called 'stylus phantasticus', Buxtehude also wrote a considerable number of smaller scale chorale preludes.
The dramatic Praeludium in E minor (BuxWV 142), like many of Buxtehude's free organ works, is sectional. After an arresting opening gambit, a few fugues follow, eventually leading to a 12/8 'Totentanz' fugue. Based on octave leaps, this wild counterpoint propels the piece to a thrilling conclusion.
