Recently announced by the KDE Project, KDE Plasma 5.23 25th Anniversary Edition has entered beta phase. Check out what's new in this preview.
The KDE Project has announced the general availability for public beta testing of the next series of KDE Plasma 5.23 desktop environments, which is dubbed the “25th Anniversary Edition”.
Since KDE Plasma 5.23 will be released in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the project, it is obvious that it will be a major release that features better support for the next generation Wayland display server, making the Plasma desktop more stable, faster and more reliable.
Plasma Wayland enhancements include middle click, paste and drag and drop items between the native Wayland and XWayland apps, the ability to adjust the Intel GPU driver RGB Broadcast settings, the ability to change the screen resolution when run in a virtual machine and better touchpad gestures.
In addition, virtual desktops are now remembered by activity, there's a new screen rotation animation and a new animated cursor icon and Task Manager feedback when launching apps, and the system tray will now notify users when something is recording on the screen.
KDE Plasma 5.23 also brings several other new features and improvements, such as an improved Kickoff app launcher that now allows users to choose between a list or grid for the All Apps view, set the launcher to stay on screen as long as you want, as well as the ability to configure power and session action buttons.
Plasma Discover's package manager has been improved to load faster and show the name of the source an application will be installed from on the install button. It also brings the ability to retain multi-screen layouts in X11 and Wayland sessions.
According to the KDE Project:
“Plasma 25th Anniversary Edition is a leap forward in the quest for a desktop with more performance and usability. We've improved Plasma's speed and stability, while adding changes that make it easier to use on both desktops and touch devices.”
The release of KDE Plasma 5.23 also promises a revamped “Present Windows” effect and a much improved Breeze theme with buttons, checkboxes, menu items, radio buttons, scrollbar, reworked sliders and spinboxes, blurred background for desktop widgets and a new gear loading spinner in Plasma and KDE apps.
The System Settings app has also been enhanced to allow users to set the status of a Bluetooth adapter at login, rearrange the list of screen refresh rates, as well as improve search and privacy features.
To top it off, the Colors page of the system settings now allows you to override the accent color of a color scheme.
Among other noteworthy changes, KDE Plasma 5.23 beta adds a simple login button to the login screen for passwordless accounts, updates the Plasma-Networks applet with support for additional authentication settings for OpenVPN connections, and removes the transparent effect on windows when moving or resizing them.
Of course, several crashes and crashes have been fixed, so KDE Plasma 5.23 should be more stable and reliable.
That said, if you want to try the beta version, I strongly recommend downloading the latest edition of KDE neon Unstable. However, keep in mind that this is pre-release software, not recommended for production use.
