Introduction to course overview , course will be held on the 13th of December and run from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m . Participants should bring the following: compass with clear base ( orienteering style, Brunton and Silva make reasonably priced units that are reliable and affordable.), paper and pencil, wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather. A handheld GPS if you have one, but not required. if you have a mobile GPS that has a battery life of 2 hours you can use that in place of a handheld.At the end of the theory session there will be a break for lunch and then practical exercises with a compass course that runs approximately 1.78 miles cross country.
Your day pack should contain the following: 1.5 or 2 litre hydration bag with water, rain gear, a small first aid kit, a space blanket, flashlight, a small knife 4" or less, folding knife would be better. Your lunch snack and any personal items you wish to have .
The first seminar is based primarily around Map and Compass reading and how GPS can assist in using map and compass. The primary method of this seminar will be Map and Compass. As well we will be discussing on how natural features and sounds of an area can help you stay found.
