LASTRE TOMBALI - carved floor slabs scattered throughout the floor of santa Maria in Ara Coeli in Rome
DONATELLO
(b. ca. 1386, Firenze, d. 1466, Firenze)
Tomb of Giovanni Crivelli, 1432-33. Marble
Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome
This carved stone slab from the tomb of Giovanni Crivelli, archdeacon of Aquileia, is the only signed example of Donatello's work from his Roman period. On the slab, which originally lay on the ground, the body of the dead man is represented within a niche with a shell vault. It seems likely that the work was commissioned and executed before Crivelli's death in 1432. Crivelli may even have been involved in the choice of image, which is markedly traditional in style.
