The third generation of this iconic British SUV gets a complete redesign almost from the ground up. It still rides on the MLA-Flex chassis, same as the larger Range Rover, but with significant upgrades for stiffness, strength and flexibility.
That chassis can also accommodate three different powertrain options.
A 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6 mild hybrid (P360 SE: 355 hp/369 lb-ft torque). You can get that same combination but tuned for a bit more power in the P400 SE version. (P400: 395 hp/406 lb-ft torque).
There’s also a PHEV which pairs that 3-liter with a 105 kW electric motor and a 32 kWh battery that’s good for 48 miles of pure electric range (434 hp and 619 lb ft of torque). Oh, and you can still get a V8. It’s a truly great time to be alive. You can have all the things.
That 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 churns out (P530: 532 hp/553 lb-ft torque) great power, too, but the numbers on that plugin hybrid, especially that torque number are super compelling. Tough choices.
This smaller Range Rover Sport looks a lot like its big brother the all-new Range Rover. It gets similar design elements and clean, smooth lines. This look streamlined with its flush door handles. But there’s still enough of the previous body style that keeps it recognizable. Honestly, I think it looks even better in these smaller proportions. But you might know by now that I prefer smaller cars and trucks.
There’s increased leg and head room in the second row for more comfort thanks to a longer 32-inch wheelbase, and the optional soft close doors won’t shatter your zen, and you can surround yourself with optional Meridian a systems. There’s one that gets your 29 speakers!
Minimalist design and styling rule in here. Land Rover uses some of my favorite materials in the industry. They’ve got sustainable fabrics, faux suede, carbon fiber, and even the piano black plastic on the center console doesn’t feel cheap and isn’t super prone to fingerprints.
I’ll admit I haven’t always been a fan of Land Rover’s driver interface. In the past it’s been layered and prone to slowness. This Pivi Pro sytem gets a 13-inch screen, isn’t as layered as in the past and feels quicker. It’s not perfect but moving in the right direction and way better than it used to be.
Drivers will also enjoy a 13.7-inch digital display which is easy to customize with a lot of options. The head up display has just enough info to inform but not be too big to be distracting.
You can control with Alexa voice commands or if that’s frustrating for you, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard. As is a wireless charger for a truly cord-free experience.
Pricing starts around $85,000 for the P360 SE and goes up from there. Hitting close to $105,700 for the PHEV P440e and that stout V8 P530 will cost a cool, or hot $123,000.
Of course, the British are going to take care of you with their advanced driver’s safety systems that get features including automatic emergency braking, a 3D surround camera which get a nice variety of angles and clear resolution. You can also see the ground in front of you in case you are taking your capable little luxury suv off-road, and get lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.
For driving on road Range Rover has included some new tech to what was already a superb ride. Only available on the First Edition Range Rover Sport is Dynamic Response Pro which gets operated by at 48-volt mild hybrid motor and helps with roll control.
That system works in tandem with the air suspension which you can control with switchable volume air springs. Incidentally, that air suspension comes standard on every Range Rover Sport. It’s comfortable and controlled. There is no extra bounce but you do feel like you’re riding on a pillow. Which basically you are. Feels great.
Even if you’re buying a luxury car that doesn’t mean you’re not interested in gas mileage. (P360/P400 I5 20 city/25 hwy; P530 V8 15 city/20 hwy) Yowza, you do take a hit with that V8 for sure. But the PHEV should even things out a bit when they’re published.
Smaller, yes, but not on stature, elegance and off-road punch where it all counts. This reimagined Land Rover Range Rover Sport is in dealers within the next month, so get ready to go check it out.
