When the COVID-19 pandemic began, it severely disrupted prevention and treatment of other diseases such as cancer. In a survey conducted by the WHO in May 2020, over 40% of the countries reported, that their cancer treatment services were partially or completely disrupted – the more severe the transmission phase of COVID-19, the more the services were disrupted[2]. So although we’re still fighting the pandemic, it’s important to put cancer back into focus again.
Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, launched in February 2021, has already started a new era in cancer care in Europe. The Plan is a strong signal that tackling cancer is a priority and that we all together can do something to prevent and treat cancer.
The third European Cancer Forum brings together policymakers, health professionals, cancer organisations, patient representatives and industry to discuss how we can together improve cancer care and cancer patients’ lives. The virtual event, "Building Strong Foundations - Exploring 3 Critical Challenges: Ensuring Cancer Policy Delivers for Patients", took place on December 3 at 10:00 – 12:30 CET. Session topics included:
Every cancer needs its own cancer plan. True?
Measuring Progress - an oncology dashboard?
How to ensure plans are implemented
