The giant trevally can grow up to 1.7 meters (5.6 feet) in length and weigh over 80 kg (180 lbs). It has a dark, metallic green to blue-black coloration with a silver underbelly, and it has sharp, serrated teeth. It is an apex predator and feeds on a variety of prey, including fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans.
The giant trevally is also an important species for commercial fisheries in many areas, although overfishing has led to declines in some populations. It is listed as a near-threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
