Hello dear friends,
So in this video I’m gonna share with you the trip we did to Kourtaliotiko Gorge which is also known as the Asomatos Gorge
Here we are at the entrance,
I liked the
The arched entrance which marks the beginning of the hike down the mountain on stone steps leading to the waterfalls
As you drive by, it is unmistakable, also you can park your car by the side of the road.
And then you’d go down a stone steps to reach the waterfall
This gorge is located in the south west of the island of Crete
in Rethymnon region
It is 3 km long
the Kourtaliotiko River flows all the way to reach Preveli beach which is also spectacular and is one of the most famous beaches in Crete, for it’s palm trees forest
There the river finally joins the sea water
I have a video about the beautiful iconic spot I’ll share the link below this video. You can hike all the way from Kourtaliotiko waterfalls to reach Preveli beach if you walk by the river, it’s a 2 and a half hours hike depending your walking speed & fitness
So advised wear a proper hiking foot ware going to both these spots
After a short descent on the stone steps to Kourtaliotiko Gorge you’ll find a spot with a cross paths, to the right takes you to the waterfalls
To the left is another stone steps that take you to a small church called Agios Nikolaos, the steps to this church are down 260 to be exact.
The church as all Greek churches is cute from inside and worth checking out, also, the cliff where the church is located over looks the waterfall from top and it’s quite beautiful view for taking pictures and maybe swim in the small ponds formed by the refreshing water.
Then we had to go back up to the cross path point to descent to the waterfall area. There is another path from the church area through the bridge but we didn’t know about it.
……………………………………………………..
The river has been named Kourtaliotis, after the homonymous gorge, where when the blowing strong wind, sounds like whistling sounds as the air passes between the rocks and sounds like a Kourtali (Krotala) or Crotalum hitting each other.
Kourtaliotis river springs are from five major sources that form a waterfall of 40 meters, where the church of St. Nicholas is located.
Tradition says that the saint touched by the hand the cliff and immediately plenty of water started to flow, from the points he touched with each finger, with reference to the five sources of the river.
But now I’ll leave you with this memory from our visit that was so special that we’d like to do it again.
I hope you enjoy the video

See you
