CLEVELAND (WKRC) - A new report is raising the alarm about stress and your health.
In the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers say stress doesn't just give you mood changes and mental fatigue, it may up the odds you are more likely to develop an autoimmune disorder.
Specialists at the Cleveland Clinic reviewed this study and released a new report Wednesday. They say this study is just more evidence that our emotions and our bodies are connected.
As part of this research , data was reviewed from a registry of more than 100,000 people. Researchers found that those who were diagnosed with stress-related disorders were more likely to experience problems with their immune systems.
They also upped the odds of developing an autoimmune disorder. These can include everything from arthritis to lupus to irritable bowel syndrome and even multiple sclerosis.
Now nobody is quite sure why, but it's possible, according to Cleveland Clinic specialists, that we have a response to stress that initially causes alarm. This is often followed by discomfort and exhaustion.
The only way to reduce it is to stop the stress or give yourself good coping mechanisms, which include things like mind-body exercises such as yoga.
