Presenters:
Scott Lindgren, Ph.D., is a pediatric neuropsychologist and Professor of Pediatrics in the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital and the Carver College of Medicine. He holds a B.A. from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Iowa. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School in Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Lindgren directs the University of Iowa activities that are part of Iowa’s HRSA Traumatic Brain Injury Implementation Partnership program, which is a collaboration with the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa, and other Iowa TBI partners.
Valerie Cool, Ph.D. is a pediatric neuropsychologist who serves children with brain injuries and other neurodevelopmental disabilities at the Center for Disabilities and Development in the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Dr. Cool holds a B.S. in Psychology and a Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of Iowa. Dr. Cool has substantial experience coordinating a statewide consultation program for children with brain injuries who experience problems in learning or behavior in school. She has also coordinated the development of a series of brain injury training materials, including information about “return to learn” after TBI. Dr. Cool currently provides consultation and training on brain injury throughout the state as part of Iowa’s HRSA Traumatic Brain Injury Implementation Partnership program.
Objectives:
1. Understand the effects of concussion on learning, memory, executive functions, behavior, emotions, and physical functioning.
2. Be able to recognize how the effects of a concussion may change at different ages and stages of development.
3. Learn how to design individualized interventions and accommodations to manage the real-life impact of concussions.
4. Learn effective strategies for helping children and youth Return to Learn and Return to Play after a concussion.
