(8 Mar 1976) Peronist supporters and other demonstrators outside Congress Building
lead in: president isabel peron of argentina was re-elected leader of the ruling peronist party, scoring a major victory over dissidents within the party on saturday (march 6). the party's national congress was summoned to elect a new executive board after the previous board resigned because of fierce clashes between moderates and loyalists.
commentary: while the congress vote proceeded inside, demonstrators marched on the building chanting slogans in support of mrs peron and waving the national flag. despite recent calls from party dissidents demanding her resignation, isabel peron regained control in an apparently over-whelming vote. her victory came when party delegates voted 175 to eight for a new 16-member peronist national council to be headed by mrs peron. it will be made up of militants completely loyal to her. the internal feuding between moderates and loyalists exploded two weeks ago, when a group of moderate party leaders met with mrs peron to demand policy changes. they also accused some of her advisers and ministers of isolating mrs peron and called for their removal. president peron called for party unity at the closing of the session. she also warned the army against ary attempts to stage a military coup, saying that neither a coup d'etat nor a "dicatatorship of minorities" would save the country.
