Police have arrested a man who attempted to drive his car at high speed into crowds on a busy street in the northern port city of Antwerp. A police spokesperson said this happened around 11 on Thursday morning. He confirmed that the driver has been arrested and said additional police officers and military backup have been deployed to the city centre. The federal prosecutor's office said the man-known only as Mohamed R - is a French national resident in France. However sources close to the case report that the man is Tunisian and not known to French police. Police found a rifle, bladed weapons and an unidentified liquid in his vehicle. No one was injured in the incident. Additional security measures are now in place in Antwerp.
