Here's a quick run-down of two important steps in boat trailering: how to check for and prevent a spun prop, and how to quickly install a M Y Wedge motor support.
Tommy Robinson, pro bass fisherman and certified outboard mechanic, recommends that boaters complete these two often-overlooked tasks before trailering their boat.
INSPECTING THE PROP
To complete the boat propeller check, you'll need:
- A block of wood
- 27mm socket
- Wrench
- Star Brite Marine Grease
How to remove a boat propeller in 8 easy steps:
- Remove the cotter pin
- Wedge the wood block behind the prop to prevent it from spinning
- Remove the nut and washers
- Remove the block of wood and lift the prop off the shaft. You may need to use the block to tap the prop for easier removal
- Remove any debris or fishing line you may find wrapped around the shaft
- Apply a bit of marine grease to the shaft
- Inspect the prop for damage and corrosion
- Reattach the prop
Giving your lower unit a bit of love before hitting the road can go a long way in protecting your investment.
