Maryland Senator Benjamin Brooks, who represents Baltimore County, is one of many lawmakers who plan to propose energy and transmission-related bills in the 2025 legislative session.
The legislation is a result of the proposed Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project, which is a 70-mile, high-voltage transmission line, which could run through Baltimore, Carroll and Frederick Counties. Transmission officials behind the project, including PJM, the regional transmission organization, have said the project is critical to creating a reliable grid and addressing growing energy needs and electrification in the state, especially with power plants retiring. However, other lawmakers have argued it won't benefit Maryland and will benefit out-of-state data centers. The cost for the transmission line is expected to be about $424 million.
