When is Liver Transplant Necessary? Do you need a liver transplant or not? This video features Dr. Vasudevan K.R., who leads the liver transplant and HPB surgery team at Jaypee Hospital, Noida. He explains the different criteria that help understand if it's possible to avoid a liver transplant by removing a portion of the failing liver. The liver, the largest organ in the body, is involved in many of the body’s metabolic systems and assists in digesting, absorbing, and processing food. The liver also stores vitamins, synthesises cholesterol, controls blood fluidity, and regulates blood-clotting mechanisms. Furthermore, it filters circulating blood, removing and destroying toxic substances. Thus, liver disease compromises the body’s ability to perform multiple functions essential to life.
Furthermore, he explains that if the entire liver has become weak and can't sustain the body’s requirements or if the person has jaundice, then the whole liver needs to be changed, and a transplant needs to be done. In the early stages of cirrhosis, when the body's demands can be met, the person can continue to carry the liver for 5-10 years. However, some may develop a slight complication in one part of the liver. In such cases, only that portion of the liver needs to be removed.
He also explains that ascites are a sign of liver damage, and if left untreated, it may lead to various life-threatening complications. However, with proper treatment and dietary changes, you can manage ascites. Your healthcare provider may also discuss getting a liver transplant if the damage is severe. Additionally, alcoholic liver disease is one of the most serious medical consequences of long-term alcohol use. Moreover, long-term heavy alcohol use is the most prevalent cause of illness and death from liver disease.
A fatty liver leads to alcoholic hepatitis, then to cirrhosis, according to traditional conceptualizations of alcoholic liver disease. However, cirrhosis can appear insidiously, without any previous stage resembling hepatitis, and alcoholic hepatitis can be fatal by itself without leading to cirrhosis. A patient may experience only one of these three conditions or any combination.
Symptoms of liver transplant patients include jaundice (yellowing of the eyes), ascites (fluid in the abdomen), hepatic encephalopathy (confusion or even coma), and bleeding in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract from varices.
