ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Breast cancer can sometimes hide and can be difficult to find.
However, new 3D technology is helping better detect lumps.
Carol Tomlinson is about to get results of a recent mammogram. It's unnerving because she can't help remembering her breast cancer diagnosis and treatments 6 years ago.
"My mother had died of cancer, so I was pretty shook up," Tomlinson said.
Mammography at the Hope Women's Center in Asheville has recently improved from 2D to 3D, which is important for Carol and many other patients.
"Some women tend to have dense breasts, when you're evaluating that image it's like a foggy day," Dr. David Hetzel said.
3D helps to clear some of those things up.
"You can see through that dense tissue and find the cancer when they are hiding and realize when there is not a cancer," Radiologist Dr. Emile Ralston said.
Many physicians are hopeful 3D mammograms will soon become the standard of care. Research shows there are fewer false positives, which reduces patient anxiety.
