Meanwhile, the muscles in the lifted leg contract but also relax periodically, and they don't carry the constant load of the body weight. To ease the burn, visualise lifting your body weight upwards (so that your obliques work harder to support you during the exercise and to keep you upright) and shift your weight more towards the lifted leg.
