A study was conducted to examine growth and feed conversion ratios (FCRs) of pond-raised hybrid catfish (Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus×Blue Catfish I. furcatus) harvested at different sizes. Fingerling hybrid catfish (initial weight per fish, mean±SD = 62±2.0 g) were stocked into 25 earthen ponds (0.04 ha each) at a density of 14,826 fish/ha. Fish were fed daily to apparent satiation with a commercial 28% protein feed. When fish reached a predetermined weight (0.454, 0.680, 0.907, 1.361, or 1.814 kg/fish), they were harvested. Fish grown to 0.46 kg and 0.70 kg during the first season had FCRs of 1.61 and 1.59, respectively. Fish carried over for a second season of growth were harvested at mean weights of 0.85, 1.43, and 2.01 kg/fish, respectively. The FCRs of these fish, 1.97, 2.10, and 1.93, respectively, were significantly higher than those of fish harvested in first season. These results suggest it is generally more cost effective to harvest food-size hybrid catfish after one season because of their increased FCR the following year. However, if fish are raised to be marketed for large fillets, hybrid catfish appear to be a good choice because they continue to grow and utilize feed relatively well in a second season.
Pond construction and preparation:
For effective management, the grow-out culture ponds should be of 0.02 – 0.1 ha.
"Ø Pond bund should have a suitable slope of 1:2-1:3. The water depth may be maintained at 0.75-1 m.Height of the dyke from the water level should be at least 100cm.
"
"Water holding capacity of the soil should be checked out.
"
"Ø During rainy season magur used to crawl out of the pond. So that during construction of pond the dyke should be made in such a way that they can't escape out.
"
Ø Unwanted weeds should be removed from the newly excavated pond.
Ø Perineal pond should be cleared from predatory fishes and unwanted aquatic plants.
Ø Mahua oil cake can be applied @ 2500 kg/ha/m depth or bleaching powder @ 350 kg/ha for killing of
"predatory fishes and their eggs. Liming depends on the pH of soil and water, where 200-250 kg/ha of agricultural lime is applied when the soil pH is above 6.0.
"
Grow-out culture phase:
"Ø The small (0.02-0.1 ha) and shallow (0.75-1.0 m-water depth) earthen ponds/stone pitched ponds/cemented tanks are suitable for grow-out culture of magur.
"
"Ø Generally high density of 50,000-70,000/ha is recommended for culture of magur but further reduction of stocking density can be adopted for higher growth of fish.
"
Ø Stocking of bigger sized seed (3-5 g) shows good survival and growth during grow-out culture.
Feed management:
"Artificial feed costs around 60-70% for magur culture. So the income of the culture fully depends upon the balanced diet provided with proper manner.
"
"Ø Pelleted feed are required for the culture purpose. The feeding rate is adjusted based on the monthly sampling and feed consumption rate to avoid feed loss.
"
Ø Fish meal based compound feed (30-32% protein) provides optimum nutrition for magur growth.
"Ø Magur fingerlings are fed twice a day at the rate of 3-5% of body weight in the feeding basket placed in different places of the pond to avoid intraspecific competition during feeding.
"
Ø Feeds like Starter-M, CIFA-Ma were developed at ICAR-CIFAfor different life stages of magur.
Ø The fish meal based commercial feeds are also available in market and that can also be used for growout culture of magur.
