On Classical King’s Northwest Focus Live with Sean MacLean, violinist Andy Liang and cellist Nathan Chan of Archipelago Collective perform the Scherzo movement from Reinhold Glière’s Eight Pieces for Violin & Cello, Op. 39.
Reinhold Moritzevich Glière was born in Kyiv in 1875. He was a highly decorated composer, winning many honors including the People’s Artist of the Soviet Union. He mentored two influential Soviet composers, Sergei Prokofiev and Nikolai Myaskovsky.
The Eight Pieces for Violin and Cello, Op. 39, date from 1909. They were composed after Glière’s return from Berlin and during his time as a teacher at the Gnesin Institute.
