STORYLINE
Thousands of high-school and university students took to the streets of Rome on Monday to protest against the government plan to reform Italy's education system.
Protesters marched from the Colosseum to Piazza Venezia, and they found police blocking the nearby road leading to the residence of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
The Berlusconi government has proposed reforming the education system in Italy with a plan that includes budget and job cuts at state universities.
In changes to lower education, students could be flunked for poor conduct, and primary school pupils would have the so called "only teacher" for all five years.
Many students have been skipping classes for weeks to protest against the plan, and in some cases they have occupied schools.
Some teachers also have joined the protest, staging open-air lessons in streets and squares across the country.
Students protesting on Monday explained that they would continue to occupy schools and protest in the streets because, they said, the government is destroying their future.
Berlusconi has said he will not budge on the reforms despite the protests.
A nationwide strike by school-teachers and university professors is planned for Thursday, October 30th.
