VOICE-OVER:
THIS MIGHT LOOK LIKE SMOKING - BUT IT'S NOT.
IT'S WHAT E-CIGARETTE USERS CALL VAPING - EMITTING NICOTINE THROUGH VAPOR.
SOME PEOPLE ARE USING THEM TO HELP QUIT SMOKING
A NEW BRITISH STUDY SUGGESTS USING E-CIGARETTES IS MORE EFFECTIVE THAN USING OTHER NICOTINE PRODUCTS OR TRYING TO QUIT COLD TURKEY.
SOUNDBITE (English): Professor Robert West, Professor of Health Psychology and Director of Tobacco Studies, University College London
"What we found was, those who were using the electronic cigarette were about 60% more likely still not to be smoking than either of the other two groups."
BUT SOME HEALTH EXPERSTS ARE NOT CONVINCED.
PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSOR MARTIN MCKEE SAYS E-CIGARETTES CAUSE MORE HARM THAN GOOD.
HE SAYS CIGARETTE COMPANIES ARE INVESTING IN E-CIGARETTES BECAUSE THEY SEE IT AS A BACK DOOR ROUTE TO RE-NORMALIZING THE IMAGE OF SMOKING.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr. Martin McKee, Public Health professor
"This is a very good way of getting round the existing bans on (the) marketing of cigarettes when your products, to children, will look exactly the same."
IN THE U.S., CITIES INCLUDING NEW YORK AND CHICAGO HAVE BANNED THE USE OF E-CIGARETTES IN PUBLIC PLACES.
THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION IS PLANNING TO REGULATE USE FURTHER - SAYING THE POTENTIAL RISKS OF E-CIGARETTES ARE STILL UNKNOWN.
SOUNDBITE (English): Professor Robert West, Professor of Health Psychology and Director of Tobacco Studies, University College London
"Yes there are risks attached to it in theory, but those have to be weighed against the gains and this is where, you know, the controversy is and where all the debate is about these cigarettes."
A DEBATE WHICH DESPITE THIS NEW STUDY IS FAR FROM OVER.
