Inguinal hernia occurs when a portion of the intestine or other abdominal tissue bulges through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, typically in the groin area. Inguinal hernias are more common in men than in women and may occur on one or both sides of the groin. Here are the symptoms and treatments for inguinal hernia:
Symptoms:
1. A bulge or lump in the groin area that may become more prominent when standing or coughing.
2. A heavy or dragging sensation in the groin area.
3. Pain or discomfort in the groin area, especially when lifting heavy objects, bending, or coughing.
4. Weakness or pressure in the groin area.
5. Burning or aching sensation in the groin area.
Treatment:
The only way to effectively treat an inguinal hernia is through surgery. In the case of small or asymptomatic hernias, a "watchful waiting" approach may be taken. However, for most inguinal hernias, surgery is recommended to prevent complications such as bowel obstruction or strangulation.
There are two types of surgery that can be used to repair inguinal hernias: open surgery and laparoscopic surgery.
1. Open surgery involves making an incision in the groin area and pushing the bulging tissue back into place before strengthening the weakened area of the abdominal wall with a mesh patch.
2. Laparoscopic surgery involves making several small incisions and using a small camera and instruments to repair the hernia.
After surgery, it is important to rest and avoid strenuous activity for several weeks. Pain medications may be prescribed to manage discomfort, and patients may be advised to wear a special support garment to help support the abdominal muscles during the healing process. Most people are able to return to normal activities within a few weeks to a few months after surgery.
