(29 Dec 2021) Hong Kong police insisted Wednesday that authorities weren't targeting the media, and urged reporters to not be biased in their reporting, after the arrests of six people affiliated with a vocal pro-democracy website.
The Stand News outlet shut down Wednesday after police raided its office and arrested six current and former editors and board members in a continuing crackdown on dissent in the semi-autonomous Chinese city.
During a news conference, a senior police officer was asked how local and international media should report on people under suspicion of national security offences, in order to avoid violating the law.
"I think the primary concern, the number one concern for us is: don't be biased, don't be biased," said Li Kwai-wah, senior superintendent of the police national security division.
"We are not targeting reporters, we are not targeting the media. We just target the national security law, the offences," he added.
Li also said four staff members of Stand News were being interviewed by police, in the belief they possessed relevant information for the investigation.
