The pandemic of Covid-19 forced us to rethink every aspect of our lives. Few sectors of the economy are as affected and challenged as the transport of people and goods. While many people long for a return to “normal” or how the world was before the pandemic hit, we understand that the “normal” was not sustainable nor represented a positive quality of life for the majority of the population. For most of the world, the pre-pandemic reality involved very long commutes, poor air quality and disconnected areas that perpetuate exclusion and incapacitates an egalitarian economic growth. Environmentally, the transport sector has the fastest growing emissions, accounting for 27% of all energy-related greenhouse gas emissions and iit is the only sector in which emissions have not yet been significantly reduced. In this session organized by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) will further discuss this concept and address the challenges presented by the Covid and Climate crises and discuss creative ways to bring about the urban mobility transition that is needed, including the use of intelligent urban planning, innovative vehicles, new tariff schemes and the power of cooperation across city and national borders.

About En Route to COP26
En Route to COP 26 was a high-level event to drive action for zero-emission transport now. Co-created by leading thinkers and doers, during 1--3 December 2020 it featured a line up of around 150 world-class decision-makers and experts from national and local government, civil society, private sector, academia, philanthropy and multilateral entities.
Scheduled to mark 12 months before the postponed United Nations Climate Conference under UK Presidency, En Route to COP26 was designed to accelerate collective and timely action by engaging transport actors to quickly, efficiently, and fairly realise the low carbon transport transition.
The event featured opening and closing sessions, as well as 9 thematic sessions covering topics central to the acceleration of transport decarbonisation such as: national climate and transport strategies, placing transport decarbonisation at the heart of green and equitable economic recovery; re-thinking urban mobility and harnessing opportunities to fast track its delivery; ending internal combustion engines for passenger and freight transport; enabling sustainable maritime transport for Small Island Developing States and maximising the links between transport and health.
