▶︎Police chase in West Midlands, England, UK, March 25, 2020 - We’ve seized more than 140 bikes in our lockdown blitz on reckless and illegal bikers − including this speeding scrambler who’s now behind bars for tearing up Birmingham streets and nearly colliding with an ambulance.
This dramatic footage shows how officers caught up with Sameer Khan who reached speeds of more than 60mph after fleeing from officers.
The 23-year-old’s progress was slowed as we deflated his tyres, and despite his efforts to run off we promptly found him hiding behind a nearby shed − and found a new home for him in prison.
We’ve taken action to tackle louts who’ve turned fields, canal towpaths and streets into illegal racetracks across the West Midlands since the end of March.
A range of teams from traffic cops, neighbourhood officers, dogs unit and police helicopter have been involved in the crackdown which has seen a range of bikes seized, including quads and scramblers. More than half were stolen and majority of others uninsured.
It’s led to scores of arrests as we seek to combat those who ride dangerously and put their own, and others’ safety at risk.
Khan initially failed to stop for police in Stechford on 25 March this year, travelled on the wrong side of the road and went through a red light before we used the stinger in Broadstone Road, Yardley.
Khan, of Orpwood Road, Stechford, admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop, having no insurance and breach of a criminal behaviour order at Birmingham Magistrates Court.
He was last week jailed for 20 months and will also be banned from driving for four years and 10 months following his release.
Sergeant Mitch Darby, from our traffic unit, said: "Reckless riding puts lives at risk and it was just fortunate no-one was seriously injured.
"We’ve listened to the concerns of our communities who’ve told us about the nuisance and dangers of anti-social riders.
"We’ve taken action and this will continue with officers monitoring hotspot areas and acting on information we’ve received."
